You're right - it's a different aesthetic
English people are ruddy with shaved heads and oiky accents
French people have aquiline features and a permanent shrub
that's shrug!!

This isn't incompatible...
A handsome Englishman would be tall and slim, elegant but with a sense of personal style, he would have red curls and grey eyes, and maybe a tatoo.
A handsome Frenchman would be dark haired, with a long nose, a beard and a comfortable woolen sweater.
